Ariella Heise
Ariella is a multimedia artist, currently residing in Brooklyn, New York.
Statement regarding recent works:
I work in painting and digital video to translate human emotion as it is experienced through an online world. I approach color and abstraction through the process of inverting and decoding digital files. I'm interested in the desire and fantasy of interior moments, intimacy through technology, and the context of my own gaze as a painter, who inhabits the white female able-body whose depiction is over-represented both in a traditional gallery space and online. I'm also building off of themes of mis-representation within the history of feminist and lesbian artist movements regarding the female gaze, hunger, and desire.
My work connects the feeling of looking in through a window from the outside and the sensation of watching a person through the rectangle of one's phone. I examine how the cropped shapes of the window's view into a house might serve to represent the algorithmic and limiting structure with which we gaze into each other's lives through digital interactions. I am concerned with the architecture of the internet, and how it might define what is supposed to be desired, and what is supposed to be shared. How do we intentionally or unintentionally edit our physique, intellect, and intimacies to be seen through a rectangle?
